Signs of Bed Bugs Include:
- Waking up with itchy raised welts, usually in rows or clusters of 3-5, often slightly larger than mosquito bites
- Small black spots, as if the tip of a ball point pen was tapped on a surface, around the cracks and crevices of sleeping and sitting areas. These spots will smear if you lick your finger and rub it over the spot.
- Exoskeletons that look just like the bugs themselves execpt tan and transulecent
- Eggs that stick to surfaces and look like tiny grains of rice
- The bugs themselves. An adult is about the size, color, and shape of an apple seed.
Bites Commonly Mistaken For Bed Bugs
Once the idea of bed bugs get into your head, it’s hard to get it out. However, often times the fear is not warranted. There are a number of pests whose bites can be mistaken for bed bugs.
Spiders
People commonly mistake spider bites for bed bug bites. Spider bites, unlike bed bug bites, will usually appear sporadically across the body, while bed bugs will normally bite in rows of three or in close clusters. Spider bites will also be more sore than itchy, and often times you will see tiny fang marks in the middle of the bite or a white head filled with puss, which never happens with bed bug bites.
Mosquitoes
Mosquito bites and bed bug bites can be hard to differentiate. The first question to ask is, “Is it mosquito season?”. If it is the dead of winter, it probably isn’t mosquitoes. Mosquitoe bites will usually be more scattered than bed bugs tell-tale row of three. People also claim that bed bug bites are much itchier than mosquitoes. Do your bites look and feel like mosquito bites you’ve had in the past, or are they different?
Fleas
Flea bites can easily be confused for bed bugs – they often are extremely itchy and appear in rows and clusters. However, flea bites are usually very numerous. If you suddenly find upwards of 50-100 bites, with no sign of bites beforehand, it may be fleas. One bed bug will bite three times once every 3-5 days, which means that if you have 100 bites it would mean there were over 30 bugs in your home, and bed bug bites would have started in small numbers and slowly grown over the span of a month or two as the bed bug population grew.
Other
There are a million things in the world that can cause you to itch, sometimes it’s bugs and sometimes it’s not. Various skin conditions and allergic reactions can cause itchiness and/or inflamation. A certified dermitologist can be a great asset if pests are ruled out as a possiblity.
